There's a call to move away from the TV licence fee towards funding from general taxation.
Senator Malcolm Byrne is welcoming People Before Profit's demand to scrap the TV licence.
The party wants it to instead be funded by a tax on big tech companies and social media firms.
However, Senator Byrne who's on the Oireachtas Media Committee agrees direct taxation would be better.
"I think we need to look at other models, where there have been effective ways of funding public service broadcasting.
"In particular, I'd look at similar sized countries such as Denmark and Finland, they moved away quite some time ago from the licence fee model, but they use direct taxation to fund public service broadcasting.
"I think that's something that would make sense."
