An Independent MEP is calling for the introduction of price caps to tackle spiralling energy costs.
Last week Electric Ireland announced it's to hike prices from August, 29% for gas and 11% for electricity.
It follows increases of 22 and 25% respectively in May, while other providers like Bord Gáis, Energia and PrePayPowers have also hiked prices this year.
Ireland South MEP Mick Wallace says the government needs to look at caps like other EU countries:
"They're freezing gas prices. They're freezing electricity prices and are telling the companies what they can charge. The French are doing it, we have the Spanish and the Portuguese doing it. The Maltese are doing it, and Hungary are at it. Ireland won't do it for some reason, and it's an ideological thing. It's crazy."
