There are calls for stricter penalties for drink and drug driving.
It comes as new figures say drink driving detections have increased by 17% in the first 10 months of this year.
Gardaí are set to crack down on motorists who drive under the influence during the Christmas period.
However, Leo Leighio, who lost his daughter in a road collision involving a driver under the influence, thinks cracking down during certain times of the year isn't enough:
"I just wish it was all you could be done all year round, but only enforcement out there isn't going to do much if there's no deterrent identity penalties are strong and there should be double penalty points. And if they're repeat offenders to cars should be confiscated, impounded."
