A cancer expert has described comments by the Taoiseach that the nation is facing a 'frightening' wave of cancer diagnoses as "surprising".
Micheál Martin warned many people’s cancer would not be treatable and that other European countries were facing a similar crisis.
However, Professor John Crown says there was evidence that cancer services were moving back towards 'a base line' this year and last:
"One, I mean heroic efforts by the nurses doctors, radiographers, those who read the slides and such to try and get things back and of course, one had the sense that things were moving back towards a more. I don't like to use the word normal because I don't believe our public health system functions very normally at the best of time. It's moving back towards its baseline in 2021 and 2022."
