The Catholic Church is accusing the Health Minister of a "draconian" ban on religious worship.

A statutory instrument signed last Monday permits faith leaders to attend funerals and "wedding receptions" - but not weddings themselves.

All four Archbishops say they should have been consulted on what amounts to a ban on public Mass.

The Primate of All Ireland, Archbishop Eamon Martin, says they're now seeking legal advice.

"We have said that we would like to seek some legal advice to try and understand this statutory instrument.

"Because as I've mentioned it's very unclear. We're not actually sure what it's saying, we're not sure what the intention of it is.

"This is because it happened out of the blue, without good consultation and mature dialogue and discussion between the government and the churches."
