The former RTE news journalist has died at the age of 74 following a long battle with motor neurone disease.
He was diagnosed with MND in 2021 and had been an active campaigner for a number of charities despite his ill health.
RTE Director General Kevin Bakhurst says Charlie Bird was a huge inspiration to his friends and colleagues
"Charlie has been such a huge figure in people's lives for the last 40 plus years. His time at RTE as one of our best known and leading news correspondents covering all the major stories for audiences here, but also, you know, within the organisation he was extremely well liked and admired by all his colleagues and generous with his time. So yeah, he's going to be very much missed by his colleagues"
