According to non-profit initiative A Playful City, children are spending more time indoors than maximum security prisoners.
The organisation aims to create safe outdoor community spaces where children can have fun with their neighbours, and encourages social interaction between young and old to bridge gaps in communities.
The project has worked in under-privileged areas such as Sheriff Street in Dublin City Centre.
Co-creator Aaron Copeland says children need a safe space to have fun:
"It would mean limiting access, it would mean treating public space as space that's available for everybody to use. Considering that 1 in 5 people in Ireland are under 15 and 80% of those do not meet the physical activity requirements on the daily level, I think that it is necessary to create an environment that is safe for young people and older people to be healthy and outside their homes."
