There was a record of 149 million contactless transactions in Ireland in the first three months of this year.

The Banking and Payments Federation says it's up nearly 13 per cent on the same time in 2020.

In the same period, ATM cash withdrawals dropped by 44 per cent and the use of cheques fell by 26 per cent.

BPFI chief executive Brian Hayes says contactless payments are increasing regularly.

"Every quarter we're producing now, we're seeing the date from each quarter increasing because the change that's occurred in the last year in terms of the total landscape of electronic payments has hit new record targets every single quarter.

"There's a fundamental change going on within the sector, and that's a movement for and towards electronic payments, and a movement against cash and cheques."
