A vocal critic of the 'Mother and Baby Institutions Payment Scheme Bill' blasted it in the Dáil yesterday, saying it is "difficult to catalogue" all of its problems.

West Cork TD Holly Cairns says the redress scheme is not fit for purpose in it's current form.

Those who were resident in a home for fewer than 6 months, those who were boarded out, and those who were illegally adopted are ineligible for redress under the Government's proposal.

Yesterday, the Minister for Children, Roderic O'Gorman, defended the €800m redress scheme saying is just "part of the state's response".

He was speaking as the second stage of the 'Mother and Baby Institutions Payment Scheme Bill' worked its was through the Dáil yesterday evening.

Speaking to RedFM News, West Cork TD Holly Cairns says building the scheme on a shaky foundation will deny justice to survivors:

"The fact that the legislation will go back to the committee for amendments, then will go back to the door to debate those amendments, and then it will go to the Seanad. I don't believe that the Government will be able to withstand the public pressure throughout all of those processes through the houses of bureaucracy, and I do think they've also underestimated the public support behind survivors of mother and baby institutions and encourage people to contact your TDS if you think that this needs to be corrected."
