The cost of alcohol in supermarkets is set to rise in the coming days as minimum pricing for will be introduced on Tuesday.

Under the plan there's to be a minimum price of 10 cent per gram of alcohol.

A 700ml bottle of supermarket gin or vodka now costing between 13 and 14 euro would cost 20 euro 71 cents under the new system.

It'll mean the cheapest bottle of wine on the market will retail for a minimum of 7 euro and 40 cents.

The Chief Executive of the Vintners' Federation, Padraic Cribbin, is backing the move:

"It has been sold below the cost of the combination of Excise and VAT. It has been sold in a way that it's been used as a loss leader, and that's not the way that the product, at any stage, was ever meant to be marketed."
