The rate of Covid positives when testing sits at about 35%, according to a medical expert.
The State is collecting less data on virus figures, leaving hospitals in the dark about how drastic this wave may be.
It comes after some hospitals have gone as far as to restrict their visiting hours in fear of another spike.
Professor of Health Systems at the School of Nursing in DCU, Anthony Staines, says things might be worse than stats are showing:
"What everyone hopes is the number of cases that arise quickly and then fall quickly, at the moment the cases are going up quite steadily and quite remorselessly in the UK. How fast it will turn around seems to vary greatly peak to peak and from country to country. Sometimes it comes down in a couple of weeks, sometimes it takes a good bit longer to come down and I don't know what's going to happen here."
