Cuts to the VAT rate charged on electricity and gas will last until the end of October.

The current reduced excise rate on petrol and diesel has been extended until the budget in October.

It will be worth around 50 euro off an annual gas bill and 70 euro off electricity for the year.

Ministers also agreed to scrap the 50 euro PSO levy and pay 100 euro to those in receipt of fuel allowance from mid-May.

Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe has been outlining some of the changes:

"Today the Government has now agreed to reductions in the rate of VAT from 13.5% to 9%, on the supply of gas and electricity from the 1st of May to the 31st of October. The cost of this measure is estimated at €46,000,000."
