Digital literacy needs to become a core part of the school curriculum, according to Cyber Safe Ireland.

A report from the World Health Organisation found Irish 13 and 15 year olds are in the top 10 for prevalence of cyberbullying and problematic social media use.

The study found progress has been made in the number of teenagers taking sugary drinks, smoking and drinking alcohol.

CEO of Cyber Safe Ireland, Alex Cooney, says campaigns around safe online use need to be established at national level.

"There's been a number of campaigns that have been run over the years,  and we've really tried to establish good health norms around healthy eating and balanced eating.

"And this is what we're saying we need to be doing for the online piece as well, that we need to establish good social norms, so that we're actually putting in place good measures, recognised good behaviour, understanding how to communicate online - all these things are so important."
