Data centres increased their electricity consumption by over 30% last year, compared to 2021.

CSO figures show from the first quarter of 2015 to the last quarter of 2022, the increase was 400%.

The increase in electricity consumption is driven by a combination of existing data centres using more electricity and the addition of new centres to the grid.

But Enterprise Minister Simon Coveney says Ireland won't be reducing its reliance on data centres to drive the economy.

"We clearly have some challenges in the next 2-3 years in terms of energy demand.

"The medium term vision for the Irish economy under this government is a tech based economy, it's full of innovation, it's full of high quality high paying jobs.

"To do that you have to manage data, and that includes data storage and data centres."
