Defective tyres could be a contributing factor in up to 14 deaths a year.
The Road Safety Authority, Gardaí and the tyre industry have teamed up to encourage drivers to check the tread.
That includes a tyre depth above 1.6 millimetres, the correct inflation pressure and using tyres which aren't damaged.
Today is Tyre Safety Day, and some dealers are offering free check-ups until Saturday.
