The Department of Foreign Affairs is warning any Irish people travelling to France to "exercise caution".
It advises monitoring local media carefully and following official advice, as some towns and cities have imposed curfews and public transport has been disrupted.
However, travel expert Eoghan Corry says France is still largely safe for holiday-makers:
"There's no reason to change travel plans. What's happening in France is a very serious issue for local people and particularly the people in the suburbs but it does not impact on international travel. It does not impact on the large number of people who travel to the Paris airports on to the south of France at this time of the year."
