Speeding, mobile phone use and not wearing a seatbelt are just some of the road offences set to get a doubling in penalties from tonight.
In total, there will be sixteen fines increased in a bid to make roads safer.
There have been 123 deaths on Irish roads so far this year.
Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Hildegarde Naughton says the measures are a necessity:
"This other spy itself is not going to help to reduce fatalities and serious injuries on our roads. Obviously, there's an important enforcement piece. This is just one of the actions that I am expediting today. It's one of the actions for the road safety strategy. That wasn't to come into play for a number of months, but during the summer looking at the number of fatalities on our roads, I wanted to do something fast."
