Alcohol has no place in childhood and underage drinking needs to be tackled.
That's the view of Drink Aware, in response to a debate around reducing the legal drinking age to sixteen.
A motion on changing the age was tabled by Cork City Cllr Shane O’Callaghan recently who believes Ireland should follow other European countries by lowering the age.
CEO of Drink Aware Sheena Horgan, says there needs to be a societal change:
"Alcohol has no place in Irish childhood. And we need to do everything that we can collectively as a society, be that politicals, politicians, be at schools, be it parents, be it communities, be it industry: we all need to pull together with regards to tackling underage drinking, and changing the culture, and changing the expectation".
