Efforts will get underway in the coming days to try to end the industrial dispute over pay and conditions by retained firefighters around the country.

Firefighters agreed to suspend industrial action for 24 hours beginning at midnight on Sunday.

They took the decision following intervention by the Labour Court.

Exploratory discussions will take place on Monday morning.

SIPTU Sector Organiser Brendan O’Brien says it is a positive development:

"We welcome today's developments and our National Retained Firefighter Committee welcomes the opportunity to set out our case to the Labour Court on Monday. Hopefully, the Labour Court can identify sufficient common ground to commence formal discussions between the parties".

The Labour Party has urged meaningful engagement from Government with firefighters at the talks to avoid an all out strike on Tuesday.

Senator Maria Sherlock says significant progress has to be made on Monday:

"It's critical now the government ensures that there is meaningful progress on Monday to stave off an all-out strike on Tuesday. The ball is very clearly in the government's court to ensure that there is going to be a meaningful pay deal".
