The head of Eirgrid has said he's confident network upgrades can happen without covering the country in new pylons.
The company has announced a €1bn spend on 40 additional power infrastructure projects.
This will involve the upgrading of existing power lines and some underground projects.
CEO of Eirgrid Mark Foley says in some areas it will also mean new pylons are needed.
"We've got a much more sophisticated toolbox today than we would have had 10 years ago.
"I'm very confident with that balanced approach that you're not going to see the country covered with new pylons.
"You will see pylons covered in certain locations, you will see new wires, but generally speaking we can bring this mix to bear and bring solutions that I think people will find less offensive."
