Eirgrid says the current cold spell has resulted in record levels of demand for electricity.
The national power grid operator reports evenings remain the busiest for electricity usage, according to The Irish Daily Mirror.
As drivers wake up to frost and ice, it's estimated motorists are using 20 cent worth of electricity to boil three-kettles full of water each morning to clear their windcreens.
However, AA Ireland is reminding people to avoid boiling water, as it can cause windscreens to crack.
