A spokesperson for elderly people in Cork say people would like to have the option to work above the age of 66.

Paddy O'Brien says it's very difficult for older people earning €400 to €500 a week, be limited to just over €250 once they reach the age of 66 and start receiving the state pension.

The spokesperson says pensioners are struggling with the cost of living crisis and is calling on the Government for the state pension to be increased by €20 a week to help rising food, fuel and electricity costs.

It comes as elderly people say that they are living day to day with a low quality of life and having to make choices between food and fuel.

Speaking to RedFM News, Paddy O'Brien says that a five euro increase of the state pension each year is not good enough:

"The elderly people of Cork city will go to bed tonight at nine o'clock because they don't want to use electricity, they don't want they had the television on, this is all for the cost of money. This is a very difficult problem and the elderly people at the moment don't have any quality of life. Elderly people must have adequate food and adequate heating, but regretfully now they have to make a choice."
