The Electoral Commission is expected to give recommendations next month to increase the number of TDs.
The capacity of the Dáil is linked to population with a constitutional requirement to have a TD for every 20 to 30 thousand people in Ireland.
Just one constituency is currently within that remit.
Political scientist Gary Murphy says that's given rise to questions about capping the number of TDs:
"It does give rise to the fact of when is too many TDs too many? And I think this is something that is going to face the the Electoral Commission. I think it's also important to say Ireland is not hugely out of kilter with states of similar size, so if you take someplace like Finland, they have 200 MPs for a population a little bit larger than ours".
