The Environment Minister says road-space will start to be 'reallocated' from September, paving the way for a reduction in car-use.
Eamon Ryan says sustainable transport options will be 'ramped up' in order to ensure there's a reduction in the volume of traffic.
Earlier this year, Minister Ryan approved plans which will see parking at public sector workplaces phased out over time.
Speaking this afternoon, he says we cannot be solely dependent on cars:
"I expect in September, we're going to start to see, as part of these Pathfinder Projects, some of the really significant examples where we do start to reallocate road space. That won't be easy. We'll have to work with local communities, local businesses, to make sure that we still provide access but not everything dependent on through traffic and yes, reducing the volume of traffic. That's what we have to do".
