Poorly treated sewage continues to harm the quality of our rivers and lakes.
That's according to an Environmental Protection Agency report on Urban Waste Water Treatment for last year.
It shows just half of Ireland’s sewage was treated to the European Union standards, well below the EU average of 90%.
Tom Ryan, a director of the EPA, says the elimination of raw sewage discharges from Castletownbere and Cobh are good examples of progress.
However the report showed that Clonakilty and Kinsale fell back into failure last year after passing standards in 2020.
