EU member states are being urged to cut their gas usage amid a looming energy crisis.

It comes as the European Commission is expected to upgrade an emergency energy 'alert' this week.

The Nordstream 1 gas pipeline between Russia and Germany was turned off last week for 'maintenance works' with fears it may no be switched on again.

Muireann Lynch, Energy Economist with the ESRI, says although Ireland doesn't rely on Nordstream, other European countries may have to tap into our supply.

"It's certainly true that we get our gas, about 30% produced here in Ireland from Corrib, and the other 70% from Great Britain, so it's highly unlikely that a molecule of gas burned in an Irish home or power plant came from Russia itself.

"However we are connected via Europe to the Russian system, and we've always had an agreement in place that in the event of an energy emergency that we would actually share resources."
