Extending the bike to work scheme to schools could lead to an increase in people cycling for their daily commute.
That's the view of Labour's Climate Spokesperson, Senator Rebecca Moynihan, who wants to encourage people to ditch their cars for the school run.
The extension would allow parents to use their own bike to work scheme to avail of bikes or cycling equipment for their children.
Senator Moynihan says the changes would broaden the scheme to make it more accessible:
"We estimate it at €1.2 million. It's not a particularly big cost, but I think it shifts people's mindset in terms of their daily commute. And we've seen the number of people cycling to school actually fall over the last 20 years. So we want to try and increase that. We're with another proposal that will also be extended to people on social welfare through the Additional Needs Payment, and just broaden out the Cycle to Work scheme from what it what it is at the moment".
