A Cork TD says families who have been on the social housing list for up to ten years are being removed from it due to a policy change.
Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire has appealed to the Housing Minister Darrgah O'Brien to reconsider revisions to the Household Means Policy that he says has led to several Cork families losing out on offers of housing.
The Dáil heard the revisions have removed any of the local authorities discretion to assess the income of those on the list.
Deputy Ó Laoghaire says it means some families who are above the financial threshold on a given month are being removed from the list, when in reality their earnings over the course of a year would mean they do qualify for social housing.
"The circulars regarding income thresholds has had a seriously adverse impact on many many families.
"It's knocked people off the housing list who are 8, 9, 10 years on the waiting list in a way that I believe is arbitrary, in a way that I believe is wrong.
"I don't believe that there's any intention for that to happen, I believe that is an unintentional consequence, but it is a problem that I would like to see addressed."
