It's feared the final cost of the Events Centre for Cork may continue to rise.

It comes after the Labour Party led calls for more accountability around the public money being spent on the project.

A Freedom of Information request revealed that almost €1.5million has been spent on the project so far on legal and consultancy fees despite the fact that not one brick has been laid.

The 6,000 seat Events Centre has been billed as a "game changer for Cork" since the sod was first turned back in 2016 however construction inflation, funding issues, a re-design and the pandemic have resulted in long delays.

It’s expected construction will take at least 18 months when it finally gets underway.

Speaking to RedFM News Peter Horgan says while the Events Centre is very positive for Cork a blank cheque for the project cannot be issued.

"What we don't know is exactly how much more money it's going to cost. We still await a final detailed design from the stakeholders, which I understand from parliamentary questions given to the Labour Party may incur even further public money to be added to the Events Centre project.

"We need public confidence to be regained in the Events Centre.

"I'm a supporter of the Events Centre, I believe Cork needs an Events Centre, but we can't have a white elephant and we can't have a blank cheque."
