A big step towards a new government will be taken today with Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil set to agree the framework for a coalition.

The document will spell out their goals for the economy, health and housing among other things.

It will be given to smaller parties and independents as they try to win over their support.

Political correspondent Seán Defoe has been telling RedFM News that it's not clear if it will be enough to get a third partner on board.

"This will get read, but if it is a document just setting out 'we want to do all these things', I don't see how that's very different to what they said during the election, or what any of the smaller parties said during the election.

"It will be interesting to see the content, and if they have left a large gap for any of this parties to come into government and put their own stamp on it.

"But there is growing scepticism in Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil that this will be able to win the numbers and win the third party that they need."
