Irish law needs to catch up with online scams so that people can be protected from so-called 'cat-fishing'.
The call comes from Fianna Fáil senator Lisa Chambers, who has had her own image used without her knowledge on a UK dating site.
She says there are victims on both sides of the scam, those whose identities are mis-used, and those who fall victim to fake dating profiles.
Senator Chambers says there are currently no laws to protect people.
