Electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles now make up over a fifth of new cars being licensed.
That's according to new figures from the CSO for the first six months of this year.
The number of licensed diesel cars has fallen by 9% compared to 2021.
Transport commentator, Conor Faughnan, says the increase in demand for electric vehicles is a sign of things to come:
"I think this is the acceleration of a trend that is only going to get faster. We're seeing an almost direct replacement of new diesel cars for new electric cars. And as that trend continues, we will rapidly get to the electrification of most of the private cars."
