Fines for drivers who speed or use a mobile phone are set to double.
The new regulations, due to be brought in by the Junior Transport Minister, will see fixed penalty charges rise above €100 for the first time.
It comes as five people were killed on Irish roads over the weekend, bringing the total number of lives lost this year to 94.
61 new speed cameras will go live this morning, which will be spread across 23 counties, mostly on regional and national routes.
Junior Minister Hildegarde Naughton outlines which offences will be impacted:
"I will be doubling the fines for speeding offenses from €80 to €160. For people who are using a mobile phone while driving, I'll be doubling that fine as well from €60 to €120 and people who are not wearing seatbelts is also doubling."
