Sinn Féin say there's nothing in Budget 2022 that will make it any easier for people to afford rent.
A recent DAFT.IE report identified how chronic supply shortages are causing rents to spike particularly in cities like Cork
The average rent in Cork city is now €1524 while in the county rents were on average 13% higher in the second quarter of 2021 than in the previous year.
Sinn Fein is proposing a tax credit for renters equivalent to one month's rent a year.
Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said the party doesn't have solutions to help people buy homes:
"What I want to know is where is Sinn Fein's empathy for private renters who want to buy. They'd give them 1000 a year, they'd give them 1000 a year in a tax credit, and they would take 20,000 off them by abolishing the help-to-buy scheme. The Help to Buy scheme has helped over 30,000 individuals and couples to buy their own home since it was established, it will help 10s of 1000s of more people to buy their own home and Sinn Fein would take that away."
