A former Fianna Fáil TD has received an apology from the Garda Commissioner for the leaking of information about an investigation relating to him eight years ago.
75 year old Pat Carey had claimed in High Court proceedings his privacy and confidentiality was breached in articles published in 2015 concerning a Garda investigation into allegations of child sexual abuse involving an ex-government Minister.
He sued the Garda Commissioner, Ireland, the Attorney General, Independent Newspapers (Ireland) Ltd and Independent News and Media Plc.
Mr Carey is to receive what he described as "substantial damages" after the High Court was told a case he took against An Garda Síochána had been settled.
The former politician was not named in the reports, but claims he had to make a public statement rejecting the innuendo that surrounded him following their publication.
