A former GAA player has been arrested in the eastern region, in relation to an ongoing investigation into alleged fraud.
It is understood the man was arrested yesterday afternoon.
The development comes following revelations from a number of people that they had been approached by the former player seeking money.
Barry Roche, Southern Correspondent with the Irish Times, says he can be held for up to 24 hours.
"Detectives from the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau arrested a man on suspicion of having committed an offence under Section 6 of the Criminal Justice Theft and Fraud Offences Act.
"That carries a maximum penalty of up to five years if convicted on indictment."
