The country’s largest public sector union is calling on the government to open public sector pay talks by May at the latest in an effort to ease the escalating financial burden faced by workers.
Forsa say that the current agreement which was first agreed in December 2020 at the height of the pandemic, has not kept pace with inflation.
Fórsa’s general secretary Kevin Callinan said failure on the part of the government to act will result in serious consequences.
"We are in a situation where the economy is growing strongly, we need to deal with this inflation problem, we need to deal with it in an organised and structured way, otherwise there are going to be significant implications for public services for industrial relations and the public finances.
"What we're saying is we need a clear signal from government and we did that really straight away.
