A four-day working week could become a reality in years to come.
The Oireachtas Committee on Enterprise, Trade and Employment will be told today a number of Irish employers are signed up to test the proposal next year.
Four-day working weeks will also be trialled in Canada, New Zealand and parts of the USA.
Kevin Callinan of the trade union Forsa, says the initiative will deliver better outcomes in the work place but only if all employers sign up for it.
"We have 17 employers committed to doing so next year.
The €150,000 that the Government has committed to research is very welcome.
"We need now is employers across the private, public and charity sectors to trial it next year so that we have a good assessment of the economic, environmental and the social benefits."
