A 4-day working week is too complicated for businesses to implement according to IBEC.
A six month trial of a 4 day working week will commence in the new year, with 17 companies so far agreeing to take part.
IBEC has told the Oireachtas Business Committee that research shows a 4-day week would be too costly to introduce and disruptive for customers and clients.
Director of Galway recruitment company I.C.E. Margaret Cox says they switched to a four day week 2 years ago.
"Everybody works Monday- Thursday and they're off Friday, Saturday and Sunday, or they work Tuesday-Friday and they're off Saturday, Sunday and Monday.
"We didn't take on additional headcount to deal with people being off on the fifth day.
"We did take on additional headcount because our business expanded, so for us it's been a commercial success."
