The findings in a research paper published by Alcohol Action and University College Cork found that existing data from 2017 under-reports the likely death rate by over 40 per cent.
The research also suggest that 27 per cent of suicides and self-harm incidents are attributable to alcohol.
CEO of Alcohol Action Ireland Dr Sheila Gilheany said the figures make for stark reading:
"Four people die every day in Ireland from alcohol related harm and illness. It's very stark. And you know, behind every figure there, there's suspensions, that's an individual from a family, and there's devastation and loss from it, and I think it's just really draws attention to the need to be able to address alcohol harm in Ireland."
