Fuel rationing for motorists is one of the topics being discussed by the government's Emergency Energy Group.

It's working on a contingency plan, in case gas and oil supply reaches a crisis point in the coming months.

Under the plans, certain service stations would be tasked with providing fuel to essential workers.

While ordinary motorists may only be entitled to between 15 and 20 litres.

Kevin McPartland, CEO of Fuels for Ireland, outlines who the essential workers would be:

"It isn't just the doctors and nurses and it's not just official vehicles. It's about saying that if you were responsible for managing, for example, the electricity network you need to be able to get to and from your place of work, there would be dedicated service stations exclusively for their use. If we were in a situation where there were heavy restrictions, normal motorists would might be limited to 15 or 20 litres."
