Gambling has the highest rate of suicide of all the addictions
Support groups say there's been a rise in the number of women in the 25 to 45 age bracket and young men under the age of 24 presenting for help with their addiction
Former Armagh footballer and addiction counsellor Oisín McConville says gambling can have a devastating impact on the gambler and their family
Speaking to RedFM News he says the gambler usually only seeks help when they have reached a crisis point
"The thing about the likes of drugs and alcohol is that, you know, there is an opportunity for an intervention at different stages, but with gambling, it's usually that intervention usually comes at crisis point. So you know, for a lot of people, you know, the job is gone, the family's gone. It is pretty stark, and it is usually at a crisis point"
