Gardai are examining whether a longstanding row was behind the stabbing of a man in Co. Kilkenny.

John Cash, who was 40, was stabbed three times with a steak knife as he walked along the Hebron Road yesterday afternoon - he later died in hospital.

A 29-year-old man remains in custody this morning, and it's understood Gardai have no other suspects.

Journalist with the Irish Independent, Robin Schiller, says the victim and suspect were known to each other:

"He's a 40 year old man, he's been named locally as John Cash and it's understood that he's originally from the Clondalkin area in west Dublin.

"He is known to the suspect, they're well known to each other, and at this stage Gardai are investigating if the motive for the assault is an historic row between these two men dating back some years, even as far back as 12 years.

"That's one line of enquiry, but certainly at this stage Gardai are not looking for anyone else in relation to the fatal stabbing of John Cash."
