Gardaí are warning young people against becoming so-called money mules by allowing their bank accounts to be used by gangs to launder money.
A money mule is a person who transfers illegally obtained money between different payment accounts on behalf of others.
830 money mules, the majority of them young people, have been identified in Ireland in the past few years.
Superintendent Michael Cryan, says a lot of the time, young people are targeted via social media:
"We have seen them as young as 14/15 with generally speaking it's about 18 to 24 and the vast majority of targeted on social media are personally shall we say at parties are true people they believe are their friends."
