Gardai say they made more than 500 arrests in Dublin last week.

It's part of an operation to keep people safe following a high profile attack on an American tourist.

Gardai have been keen to show high visibility in Dublin following the brutal assault of New Yorker Stephen Termini in Temple Bar last month.

After the assault, the US embassy issued a safety warning about travelling here.

Now Gardai have issued a detailed statement this morning about their operations over the course of last week which is something they don't usually do.

They say they made 509 arrests last week - 89 of these were for drug trafficking.

689 searches were carried out - mostly in relation to drugs.

Over 1,500 patrols were conducted - along with 196 road safety checkpoints.

Gardai say this activity shows the dedication of Gardai to actively work in communities to keep people safe.
