The Gardaí spent €73 million in overtime in the first seven months of the year.
That's according to the most recent Policing Authority report which shows it's €14 million over budget.
Every month, the Garda Commissioner sends a written report to the Authority which covers the main areas of the work of An Garda Síochána.
Fine Gael TD, Neale Richmond, says more resources for the force are vital for keeping people safe:
"We need to see a lot more Gardaí out on the beach. We need to see Gardaí in our communities, on our public transport, and on our streets particularly after dark. If that means that we need additional overtime or more importantly, to recruit more Gardaí, then that's something that absolutely should be prioritized by the Minister."
