Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch is due to go on trial today for the murder of David Byrne, who was shot dead at a boxing weigh-in at the Regency Hotel in Dublin in 2016.
Before that, the sentence hearing is due to take place of former Sinn Féin councillor, Jonathan Dowdall, who last week admitted facilitating the gangland murder.
It has been just over a year since Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch was extradited from Spain to be charged with the murder of David Byrne.
Over the summer, the Supreme Court paved the way for his trial to begin today as planned before the Special Criminal Court.
Mr Hutch had challenged the decision to have his case heard before the non-jury court, but was unsuccessful.
Last week, Jonathan Dowdall, a former SF councillor for Dublin City Council, and his 65yo father, Patrick, admitted helping those who carried out the attack at the Regency by making a room at the Dublin hotel available to them.
Their sentence hearing is due to take place before Mr Hutch’s murder trial begins.
Two other men are due to stand trial this afternoon for related charges.
