The Government believes that the public will most need help with their bills in the Autumn when usage will naturally go up as energy prices continue to rise.

That's according to the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Michael McGrath who say the Government is trying it's best to bring the country through these challenging times without doing any long term damage to the economy.

The Minister says Ireland is experiencing levels of inflation not seen for 40 years and the Government has responded with a whole series of measures on both tax and expenditure to help people.

Yesterday, Ministers announced a €6.7 billion package for Budget 2023 which will take place on September 27th, two weeks earlier than usual.

Opposition parties have hit out at the Government's delay in providing more alleviations saying they are watching people falling into debt and poverty before taking any action.

Speaking on the Neil Prendeville Show on Cork's RedFM, Minister Michael McGrath says what we are experiencing is a global phenomenon but the country is in a strong position:

"We have come through COVID in good shape, and we're seeing that and the way the economy has come back. What we're experiencing now is a global phenomenon, unfortunately. But the good news is we're in a strong enough position now to come through this and to be able to help people when they're most needed."

"Our commitment is that we are going to go much further. We've spoken about the overall budget package, and what I'm working on separate to that is the package of one off items that we think will make a real difference for people in the autumn. This is difficult across the board, but we're trying our best to bring the country through it, while ensuring we don't do any long term damage to the competitiveness of our economy."
