The government's new housing strategy tackles a wide range of issues, according to a planning expert.

Minister Darragh O'Brien will launch the 'Housing For All' plan today, replacing the Rebuilding Ireland programme from 2016.

It's expected to deliver 300,000 homes by 2030, across a mix of social, affordable and private development.

Head of UCC's Planning School, Brendan O'Sullivan, says the State needs a change in direction in housing development.

"30 years ago the state was pretty good at developing good housing areas in our cities around the country.

"We backed off from that over the years, and now it's come back in a really interesting partnership kind of way.

"It's not just tackling one single issue, there's issues about vacancy, about dereliction, about affordability."
