Free GP care will be provided to an additional half a million people under new plans being brought to cabinet.
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly says from next month, children aged six and seven will be able to avail of the free GP visit card.
While those earning up to the median household income of 47 thousand euro a year will be included later.
Minister Donnelly says it's a move towards universal healthcare.
"There are many in the middle who simply cannot afford it.
"We do not want a situation where people are putting off seeing their GP.
"This is a really important measure, for half a million men women and children.
"It's in two parts, includes all children age six and seven, and it includes up to the median household income."
